The Town That Grew Around a Tree
Tree Service in Buttonwillow is a fitting thing to offer, since the town is named for a tree. A lone buttonbush (the "button willow") once stood as a landmark on an old trail across the valley; it was a Yokuts meeting place and later a spot for settlers' stock rodeos, and today it is California Historical Landmark No. 492. Buttonwillow itself is a small unincorporated community about 26 miles west of Bakersfield, with roughly 1,300 residents on about 7 square miles, surrounded by what locals call cotton country.
Wide-open ground
Because Buttonwillow is ringed by farmland, homes and farm yards here are exposed. Wind crosses miles of open ground before it reaches a tree, with almost nothing to slow it down. The town sits at about 269 feet, well below Bakersfield's 404. Windbreak rows of eucalyptus, cypress or pine were planted around many rural homes for that reason, and decades later those rows are often tall, crowded and full of dead trees.
Typical Buttonwillow work
- Thinning or removing old windbreak rows
- Taking down dead trees around houses, barns and shops
- Clearing volunteer trees and brush from ditches and fence lines
- Pruning shade trees around homes in town
- Palm trimming and removal
- Stump grinding so ground can be farmed or landscaped
Near the Tule Elk Reserve
Nearby, toward Tupman, the Tule Elk State Natural Reserve has protected a herd since 1932, when about 175 elk from the Miller and Lux ranch herd were moved there. Miller and Lux also set up a headquarters and store near the Buttonwillow tree around 1885. Native plants at the reserve include willow, mule fat and mesquite, a reminder of what grows here without irrigation. Most yard trees in Buttonwillow are not natives and depend on watering, so they show drought stress quickly.
Planning a rural job
On acreage, it often makes sense to deal with all the trees in one visit: the dead ones in the windbreak, the shade tree over the house, the stumps from past removals. Doing it together saves travel and setup, and the written estimate breaks each part out so you can decide what to include. Tell us if you want to keep firewood or chips; it changes the price.
Shade around the house
In town, Buttonwillow homes rely on a few big shade trees to get through summer. Those trees deserve regular deadwood removal and a thinning every few years. On farm properties, the shade trees nearest the house are usually the ones to put first in the budget, since they are closest to people and roofs.

Buttonwillow Questions
Do you come all the way out to Buttonwillow?
Yes. Buttonwillow is part of our service area, and the estimate is free. Larger rural jobs are often easier to schedule than tight city ones.
Can you clean up an old windbreak without removing all of it?
Yes. We can take out the dead and leaning trees, thin crowded sections and leave healthy trees standing so the windbreak still does its job.
What happens to all the wood on a big rural job?
It can be chipped and spread on site, cut and stacked as firewood, or hauled off. Each option is priced on the estimate.
Can stumps be ground deep enough to farm over?
Yes, we can grind deeper than usual and clear the major roots near the surface so equipment can pass.
Can you take out trees close to a farm shop or equipment yard?
Yes. We plan the drop zone so nothing lands on buildings or machinery, and we can section trees down if space is tight. Move what you can before work day and we will work around the rest.
