Delano, Grapes and Shade

Tree Service in Delano covers the northern edge of where we work, about 30 miles north-northwest of Bakersfield on Highway 99. Delano had 51,428 residents in the 2020 census, second in Kern County only to Bakersfield, and it is surrounded by table-grape vineyards. Town lots here are generally flat, irrigated and hot, with the same need for shade that drives every valley yard. The difference is scale: Delano has a real downtown, older neighborhoods with mature trees, thirteen city parks and plenty of newer homes on the outskirts.

Railroad town origins

Delano was founded as a railroad town where the Southern Pacific line coming south from San Francisco ended, and it is named for Columbus Delano, Secretary of the Interior in the 1870s. Older neighborhoods near the tracks tend to have the largest yard trees in town, and those are the trees most likely to carry deadwood, heavy end-weight on long limbs, and roots that have had decades to work under walks and driveways.

Tule fog and winter work

Delano's climate is hot and dry in summer and cool and damp in winter, with frequent winter tule fog and about 7.5 inches of rain a year. The winter months are the right time for most structural pruning of deciduous trees, because the leaves are off and the tree is dormant. Fog days do not stop the work, but they do mean we plan rigging and drop zones carefully when visibility is short.

Families that stay put

Census QuickFacts shows that 94.8 percent of Delano residents lived in the same house a year before, and the city's 62.8 percent owner-occupancy rate is higher than Bakersfield's. Owners who plan to stay tend to ask for maintenance rather than emergencies: a pruning plan for two or three big trees spread over a couple of seasons, palm cleanups once a year, or a stump ground out so a new tree can go in.

Delano work we quote often

  • Pruning mature shade trees in older neighborhoods
  • Annual palm trimming and seed-pod removal
  • Removing trees that died back after a dry season
  • Clearing trees that block alleys, fences or driveways
  • Grinding stumps from old removals
  • Lowering trees in sections where houses sit close together

A note on the 1965 strike

Delano is also where the 1965 table-grape strike began, when Filipino farm workers led by Larry Itliong walked out and Cesar Chavez's union joined within a week, eventually forming the United Farm Workers. A lot of Delano families have deep roots in the town because of that history, and many of the trees in those yards were planted by grandparents. We take that into account when someone asks whether a tree can be saved.

Trees around vineyards

Many Delano homes back up to vineyard blocks or sit on lots carved out of old farm ground. Trees on those edges often get extra water from the farm side, grow lopsided toward it, and then lose that water when a block is replanted or the irrigation changes. If a tree on the edge of your lot has started dropping leaves early, that history is worth mentioning when you call.

Delano Questions

Do you cover all of Delano?

Yes, the whole city and nearby homes outside the city limits. Delano is the northern end of our service area.

Does Delano require a permit to cut a tree on my property?

We check the city's rules for each job. Trees in the public strip along the street are usually treated differently from trees in a back yard, so tell us where the tree stands when you call.

How often should palms be trimmed in Delano?

Most fan palms look and behave best with one cleanup a year, removing dead fronds and seed stalks. Cutting green fronds hard every year weakens the palm, so we leave the healthy ones.

Is winter fog a problem for scheduling?

Rarely. Dense morning fog can push a start time later on a job near a busy street, but it does not usually cancel the day.
