Bringing Down Trees Behind Block Walls and Over Pools
Tree removal in a typical Bakersfield backyard means working in a box. Many lots are enclosed by block walls, with a pool or patio cover a few feet from the trunk and a side gate barely wide enough for a wheelbarrow. A tree in that space cannot simply be felled. It comes down from the top: limbs first, then the trunk in sections, with heavier pieces lowered on ropes so nothing lands on the roof, the coping or the neighbor's side of the wall. The height of the tree matters, but access and what sits underneath usually decide how long the job takes.
Signs a tree should come out
Some trees are easy calls: a tree that is dead, a pine that has browned out through most of its crown, a trunk with a deep split, or a fresh lean with the soil heaved up on one side. Others take judgment. A sweetgum in slow decline, a eucalyptus that has outgrown a small yard, a mulberry or ash heaving a driveway, or a tree that keeps dropping limbs onto the patio might be pruned and kept, or might be better replaced. We tell you what we see and what the options cost, including when pruning is the more sensible answer.
Drought-killed and declining trees
In Bakersfield, a large share of removals trace back to water. UC Cooperative Extension in Kern County calls proper irrigation the single most important practice for keeping trees alive here, and trees that lose their water when a lawn is converted or a sprinkler line fails often decline over the next year or two. Pines tend to brown from the top down. Extension has also reported that about 80 percent of local liquidambar trees are in decline, probably from Xylella bacteria. Dead wood dries out and turns brittle in the valley heat, so a tree that is routine to remove while it still has some life in it gets harder, and riskier to climb, the longer it stands dead.
Parkway trees and power lines
If the tree is in the parkway between the sidewalk and the street, Bakersfield's code puts it under the authority of the Recreation and Parks director and requires contractors to get a city permit before working on it. We check that before quoting. Trees growing into overhead lines are PG&E's to clear near the wire. Once the line is safe, we take care of the rest of the tree.
Commercial and multifamily properties
For apartment complexes and businesses with an approved landscape plan, Bakersfield's landscaping chapter generally requires a removed tree to be replaced within 120 days, with exceptions for public safety and acts of nature. Homes with four or fewer units are exempt. If you manage that kind of property, check with the city's planning division before the tree comes down.
Wood, chips and the stump
You decide what stays. Logs can be left in rounds or hauled away, and brush is chipped, with the chips left for mulch or removed. Palm trunks and fronds are handled separately. Grinding the stump is its own line on the quote, done the same day or later.
Common Jobs
Removal includes taking the tree down and dealing with everything that comes off it.
Sectional removal
Limbs and trunk sections cut from the top down and lowered on ropes where something below needs protecting.
Dead and drought-stressed trees
Pines, sweetgums and shade trees that have died or declined past saving, taken down before the wood gets more brittle.
Palm tree removal
Tall fan palms and date palms removed in sections, with palm material hauled separately.
Chipping and haul-off
Brush chipped on site, logs left or removed, and the yard raked and blown clean.
Stump grinding add-on
The stump ground below grade the same day, if you want it gone.

How It Works
1. Site visit
We look at the tree's condition, what is under it, nearby lines, and how a crew gets in.
2. Itemized quote
Each tree, the method, cleanup, stump and price, all on paper before anything is scheduled.
3. Removal
The tree comes down in sections from the top, with pieces lowered where needed.
4. Clean up
Brush chipped, wood handled as agreed, and the yard cleared of debris.

Tree Removal Questions
How much does tree removal cost in Bakersfield?
HomeGuide's 2026 guide puts most removals between about $200 for a small tree and $2,000 or more for one over 60 feet. In Bakersfield, the biggest price factors are usually access through a side gate, whether limbs must be lowered over a pool or roof, and whether the tree is dead. We give a written price after seeing it.
Do I need a city permit to remove a tree on my property?
For a tree on your own home lot, Bakersfield's street tree code does not set out a removal permit. Trees in the parkway or other public places are under the Recreation and Parks director, and contractors need a city permit to work on them. Commercial and multifamily sites with approved landscape plans usually must replace removed trees within 120 days.
Can a dead pine wait until fall?
It can, but it gets harder to remove the longer it stands. Dead pine wood dries and becomes brittle in the summer heat, which makes climbing and rigging slower and less predictable. If it stands over the house, a wall or a play area, sooner is safer.
What if my neighbor's tree is hanging over my yard?
Talk with your neighbor first; the tree belongs to whoever owns the land where the trunk stands. If they agree to removal or pruning, we can lower limbs on ropes from either side of the wall so nothing lands where it should not. Getting agreement in writing avoids disputes later.
Is the stump included in the removal price?
Only if you want it. Stump grinding is listed separately on the quote so you can decide. Many people grind it the same day; others leave it for later or keep it.
