East Niles Neighborhoods
Tree Service in East Niles is neighborhood work on Bakersfield's east side. East Niles is an unincorporated census-designated place of about 28,400 people on roughly 5.5 square miles, bordered by the city of Bakersfield to the north and southwest, Bakersfield Country Club to the northwest, Hillcrest and Potomac Park to the west and Fairfax to the south. It was counted as its own place for the first time in the 2020 census, but the houses and the trees have been there much longer.
Dense, family-heavy blocks
With about 5,200 people per square mile and more than half of households raising children, East Niles yards are full. Trees share space with swing sets, cars, patio covers and neighbors on three sides. That changes how tree work is done. Most removals here are taken down in sections and lowered, and pruning plans have to think about what a falling limb could hit, not just what the tree looks like.
Higher ground to the east
East Niles sits higher than downtown Bakersfield, rising toward the foothills on the east side. Trees on the east-facing edges of the valley floor catch strong afternoon wind, and the February 4, 2024 windstorm hit northeast Bakersfield hard enough that PG&E named it one of the two worst areas in a 10,500-customer metro outage. Wind-thinning before winter is worth considering for any big tree over a house.
County, not city
Although it looks like part of the city, East Niles is governed by Kern County. That means Bakersfield's parkway tree rules and contractor permits do not apply here. A review of county rules found no general permit for removing an ordinary tree on private property in unincorporated areas. Trees in the road right-of-way or touching utility lines are handled differently, and we check for both.
What East Niles homeowners call about
- Big mulberry, ash and pine trees growing over roofs
- Dead trees in back yards with no truck access
- Palms dropping fronds onto driveways and cars
- Roots lifting walks and block walls
- Stumps left from earlier removals
- Low limbs over sidewalks and the street
Hard choices on small lots
Sometimes the right tree is in the wrong place. A tree planted three feet from a block wall forty years ago will eventually win that fight. When we see that, we explain your options honestly: root pruning and weight reduction where it is safe, or removal and replanting a better-suited tree a sensible distance away.

East Niles Questions
Am I in the city or the county?
If your address is in East Niles, you are in unincorporated Kern County, even with a Bakersfield mailing address. Your trash bill and property tax bill are good places to check.
Can you remove a tree if the only way in is through a narrow side yard?
Usually. We cut the tree in sections, lower them by rope and carry or roll the wood out. Access is part of the estimate.
My tree's roots are cracking the block wall. What can be done?
Sometimes a root can be cut back on the wall side without harming the tree, but large roots near the trunk usually cannot. We look at root size and distance and give you an honest answer.
Can you trim the palm over my driveway?
Yes. We remove dead fronds, seed stalks and fruit so they stop landing on cars, and haul everything away.
How do I know if a big limb is about to fail?
Warning signs include a crack where the limb meets the trunk, dead bark, fungus growing on it, or a limb that has started to sag lower than it used to. Any of those deserves a closer look before the next wind.
