Working in Lamont
Tree Service in Lamont is a regular run for us down Weedpatch Highway. Lamont is an unincorporated community about 9 miles south-southeast of downtown Bakersfield, founded in 1923 and settled heavily in the 1930s through the 1950s by families who came west during the Depression and the Dust Bowl, and later by oil-field workers. The house lots from that era are modest, and many have one or two big shade trees that have been there as long as anyone remembers.
Gusts come through fast
The south end of the valley gets sudden thunderstorm wind. On September 28, 2016, a storm pushed a 52 mph gust through Lamont just before 4 p.m. while blowing dust cut visibility in East Bakersfield. In the February 4, 2024 windstorm, PG&E counted about 187 Lamont customers without power. Short, sharp wind like that finds the weak spots in a tree: a rotten old cut, a split fork, a palm crown full of dead fronds.
County rules, not city rules
Because Lamont is unincorporated, it is under Kern County rather than the City of Bakersfield. Bakersfield's street-tree code and contractor permits do not apply here. A review of county rules found no general permit for taking down an ordinary tree on private land in unincorporated Kern County. We still check for power lines, the county road edge and anything shared with a neighbor before we quote.
Common Lamont requests
- Cutting dead limbs out of old mulberry, ash and elm trees
- Taking down trees that died over a hot summer
- Trimming fan palms and removing seed stalks
- Grinding stumps left by past removals
- Clearing trees and brush along back fences and alleys
- Raising low limbs over driveways and sidewalks
Families and budgets
Lamont households are large and many work in agriculture, where income can change with the season. We understand that tree work competes with everything else. That is why the estimate lists each job separately with its own price. You can choose to take care of the dangerous limb now and leave the cosmetic trimming for later, and you will know exactly what each piece costs before anyone climbs.
Keep the tree healthy between visits
Most Lamont shade trees live on whatever water reaches the yard. A slow, deep soak every week or two in summer does more for a mature tree than daily light sprinkling. Keep mulch a few inches away from the trunk, do not pile soil against the base, and avoid trenching through the root zone. Those habits cut down on the deadwood we end up removing.

Lamont Questions
Do I need a county permit to take down a tree in Lamont?
For an ordinary tree on your own lot, there does not appear to be a general Kern County removal permit for unincorporated areas. Trees near power lines or in the county road strip are different, and we check those before quoting.
Can I just pay to have the dangerous part done?
Yes. Each item on our estimate is priced separately, so you can choose to remove one dead limb now and leave the rest for later.
My palm has years of dead fronds. Is that a fire or wind risk?
Both. A thick skirt of dry fronds can catch fire and can also come down in a windstorm. A cleanup removes the dead fronds and seed stalks while leaving the healthy green ones.
Can you grind an old stump that has been there for years?
Yes. Old stumps are often softer and grind faster, though roots near walls or fences can take extra care.
Can you trim a tree that hangs over Weedpatch Highway traffic?
If the tree is on your property, yes, but work over a busy road needs traffic control and sometimes approval from the agency that owns the road. We will tell you what is involved when we see it.
