Trees on Weedpatch Lots

Tree Service in Weedpatch is mostly rural-lot work. Weedpatch is a small unincorporated community about 10 miles south-southeast of Bakersfield, off State Route 184 just south of Lamont. It covers about 3.6 square miles with roughly 2,200 residents, so properties are more spread out than in town. Trees here tend to be windbreaks, volunteer trees along ditches and fences, and a few big shade trees right next to the house.

A name with history

The name was in use by 1874, and the community itself began in 1922. During the Depression, the federal Arvin camp about a mile south of town, known to everyone as the Weedpatch Camp, took in migrant families fleeing the Oklahoma Dust Bowl. John Steinbeck referenced it in The Grapes of Wrath, and the camp still serves farm workers today. Some of the oldest trees around Weedpatch were planted by those families and their children.

Rural lots need a different approach

On a parcel with room to work, a tree can often be felled in one piece in a clear direction, which keeps cost down. What raises cost on rural lots is usually the cleanup: big volumes of brush, long distances to haul, and stumps in places a grinder has to reach across rough ground. We walk the whole site so the estimate covers the real job, not just the cutting.

Common work around Weedpatch

  • Taking out dead trees in windbreak rows
  • Clearing volunteer elm, tamarisk and tree of heaven along fences and ditches
  • Pruning or removing big shade trees near homes
  • Removing palms and hauling the fronds
  • Grinding stumps in yards and pasture
  • Cutting trees away from sheds, barns and equipment yards

Money is tight for many families

Weedpatch is one of the lowest-income areas in Kern County. We will not push work you do not need. On the estimate visit we tell you what is dangerous, what can wait and what is just for looks. If only one tree needs attention this year, that is all we will quote.

Dry ground and dead wood

On rural lots without regular irrigation, trees depend on groundwater and whatever winter rain falls, which in this part of the valley is only a few inches. Drought years leave dead tops and limbs that become brittle in the sun. Those are worth removing before the windy season, especially over a driveway or the roof.

Before you burn or bury

On rural lots it can be tempting to pile brush and burn it or push it into a ditch. Burning is restricted in the valley because of air quality, and debris in a ditch can block water for everyone downstream. Chipping and hauling cost a little more, but they keep you out of trouble and leave the property clean.

Weedpatch Questions

Can you clear a row of dead windbreak trees?

Yes. We fell or section the dead trees, chip the brush, and grind stumps if you want the ground usable again. On long rows we often price per section so you can do it in stages.

Is it cheaper to remove a tree on open ground?

Usually, because there is room to drop it safely instead of lowering it piece by piece. Haul-away distance and stump access can offset some of that, so the estimate covers both.

Do you remove tamarisk or tree of heaven?

Yes. Both spread aggressively along ditches and fences. Cutting alone often leads to sprouts, so we talk about stump grinding or follow-up treatment when we quote.

Can I keep the firewood?

Of course. Tell us at the estimate and we will cut the wood to length and leave it stacked where you want it, which can lower the price.
