Trees in Rose Country
Tree Service in Wasco is a short drive up Highway 43 for us, and the town is worth the trip. Wasco sits on the flat valley floor about 24 miles northwest of Bakersfield where State Routes 43 and 46 cross. It is best known for roses: in 2007 about 55 percent of the roses grown in the United States came from in or around Wasco. The same deep, irrigated farm soil that grows rose bushes also grows big yard trees quickly, and fast growth tends to mean weak wood if nobody shapes it.
Long-time residents, steady homes
Census QuickFacts reports that 93.5 percent of Wasco residents lived in the same house a year earlier. People stay. That shows in the yards: trees planted when a house was new are now taller than the roofline, and the shade they cast is the reason the house is livable in July. Our job in Wasco is usually to keep those trees, not cut them down, by thinning weight off long limbs, lifting the crown off the roof, and taking out deadwood before it falls.
Wind out of the open valley
Wasco is surrounded by open farmland, and when the February 4, 2024 windstorm moved through, PG&E reported about 1,000 Wasco customers without power, more than any other Kern County community outside metro Bakersfield in that report. Trees on the outer streets of town, with nothing upwind but fields, take that kind of wind head-on. Palms shed fronds onto cars and roofs; mulberry and elm drop limbs where old cuts have rotted.
The jobs that come up most
- Thinning and crown raising on mature shade trees over roofs and yards
- Cleaning up palms: dead fronds, seed stalks and old boots
- Removing trees that died after a dry summer or a broken irrigation line
- Clearing trees out of alleys and away from block walls
- Stump grinding after removals
- Hauling away all the brush and wood
Old town and new edges
Wasco was first called Deweyville, got its post office in 1899 and was renamed Wasco in 1907. It incorporated in 1945. The older blocks near the center have narrower lots and established trees, some of them crowded together as neighbors planted on both sides of the fence. On those lots, removals often mean taking a tree down in pieces rather than felling it. Newer neighborhoods on the edges have young trees that benefit most from a few rounds of structural pruning.
Wasco State Prison and other large properties
The town is also home to Wasco State Prison and oil and gas operations such as the Wasco Oil Field, discovered in 1938. Our work here is residential, but many Wasco homeowners also own or manage farm parcels nearby, and we can quote windbreak rows or clearing on those at the same visit.

Wasco Questions
Is Wasco too far for a free estimate?
No. Wasco is within our normal service area, and estimates are free there just as they are in Bakersfield.
My tree is shading my roses. Can you thin it without hurting it?
Usually. Selective thinning removes a portion of the live crown and lets light through without topping the tree. Most healthy trees handle a moderate thinning well when it is done in the cooler months.
Can you remove a tree that is between my house and my neighbor's?
Yes. On tight Wasco lots we lower pieces with ropes instead of dropping the tree. We like to have both neighbors aware of the plan before work day.
What do you do with the wood?
Unless you want to keep firewood, we chip the brush and haul the wood away. The written estimate says exactly what is included.
