Keeping Tall Palms Clean and Healthy
Palm tree trimming is its own trade, and in Bakersfield, where tall fan palms line streets and tower over backyards, it is one of the most common jobs we get. A palm does not branch like a shade tree. It grows from a single bud at the top, adds new fronds from the center, and lets old ones die and hang down. Left alone, those dead fronds build up into a thick brown skirt that is heavy, dry and a home for rodents and pigeons. Trimming removes the dead and dying fronds and the flower and seed stalks, while leaving the healthy green crown in place.
How much to cut
The most common mistake in palm trimming is taking too much. Cutting off healthy green fronds, the shape sometimes called a hurricane cut or pineapple cut, removes leaves the palm uses to make food and can leave it weakened and with a narrowed trunk section where it was stressed. The usual guidance is to remove fronds that are dead or mostly brown and leave the living fronds, keeping the canopy full rather than shaving it to a few spikes at the top.
Climbing tall palms
Many older Bakersfield fan palms are taller than a two-story house. Trimmers reach them with a lift where the yard allows it, or by climbing with a lanyard and a work positioning saddle. Climbing spikes wound the trunk, and since a palm cannot heal those wounds, spikes are generally avoided on palms that are being trimmed and kept. Fronds are cut and dropped or lowered, depending on what sits below.
Where the debris goes
Palm material is tough and fibrous and breaks down slowly, and many green waste programs will not take it. The Mt. Vernon Recycling and Composting Facility in Bakersfield, which accepts tree limbs, trunks and brush, lists palm among the materials it does not accept. That is why we price palm debris haul-off separately and plan it as part of the job.
Palms near power lines
Palms often grow right up into overhead lines, and dry fronds touching wires are a real hazard. In 2021, PG&E contract crews cut down seven historic palms at Rosedale Ranch near Seventh Standard Road, saying they stood near distribution lines and had a long record of contact with the conductors. If your palm's fronds are near the wires, the part near the line is PG&E's to handle. We can do the rest.
How often
HomeGuide's 2026 guide says most palms need trimming once or twice a year depending on type and condition. Fast fan palms that shed a lot of fronds and set heavy seed may need yearly attention.
Typical Jobs
Each palm is cleaned to keep a full, healthy crown.
Dead frond removal
Brown and hanging fronds cut close to the trunk without damaging the green crown.
Seed pod and flower stalk removal
Stalks taken off before they drop fruit and seeds on patios, pools and cars.
Skirt removal
Years of dead frond buildup cleared from fan palms that have gone untrimmed.
Palm debris haul-off
Fronds, boots and seed stalks loaded and removed, since local green waste sites often refuse them.

Palm Tree Trimming Questions
How often should palm trees be trimmed in Bakersfield?
Most palms need trimming once or twice a year, according to HomeGuide's 2026 guide. Palms that set heavy seed or shed many fronds may need yearly cleaning to keep seed pods off pools and patios.
Should I have my palm cut back to just a few fronds?
No. Removing healthy green fronds takes away the leaves the palm uses to feed itself and can weaken it. Remove dead and dying fronds and seed stalks, and leave the living crown full.
Why does palm debris cost extra to haul?
Palm fronds are tough and slow to break down, and Bakersfield's Mt. Vernon Recycling and Composting Facility does not accept palm, even though it takes other limbs and brush. That means separate handling and disposal.
Can you trim a palm growing into the power lines?
The fronds near the line are PG&E's to handle; do not let anyone cut them while the line is live. Once the utility has cleared or de-energized the area, we can trim or remove the rest of the palm.
