Trees at the Crossroads

Tree Service in Pumpkin Center covers a small community with a well-known intersection. Pumpkin Center is an unincorporated place about 7.5 miles south-southwest of downtown Bakersfield, where State Route 99 meets State Route 119, the Taft Highway. Freeway signs point travelers to it. It is small, about 420 residents on less than half a square mile, and the homes here sit between the highways and the farmland that surrounds south Kern County.

Trees older than the buildings

Pumpkin Center's best-known landmark, "The White House," was established in 1925, and its four original trees have grown taller than its buildings. That is a fair picture of the area. Trees planted early by the first families have had nearly a century to grow, and on a small parcel a single big tree can dwarf the house. When those trees are healthy, they are worth caring for. When they decline, they need to come down in a planned way.

Freeway-side lots

Trees beside major roads get dust, heat radiating off pavement, and wind from passing trucks as well as storms. Their roots may also have been cut during road work over the years. Look for dieback on the side facing the road, loose bark at the base, or a lean that has gotten worse. Any of those is a reason for a closer look.

Common jobs

  • Thinning or reducing large, old shade trees
  • Removing dead trees along fences and property edges
  • Clearing brush and volunteer trees on small acreage
  • Palm cleanups and removals
  • Stump grinding
  • Hauling all debris off site

County rules

Pumpkin Center is in unincorporated Kern County, so the City of Bakersfield's street-tree chapter does not apply. A review of county rules found no general permit requirement for removing an ordinary tree on private land in unincorporated areas. Trees close to state highway right-of-way or utility lines are a different question, and we sort that out before any cutting near the road.

Wind across the south valley

Winter storms reach the south valley with little in the way. In February 2024, gusts above 55 mph were reported in parts of Kern County, and palm trees fell across South Union Avenue at Shafter Road in south Bakersfield. Thinning out dead and crowded wood before the windy months is cheaper than storm cleanup.

Watch the roots

Root damage is a hidden cause of decline. Trenching for water lines, a new driveway or grading near a tree can cut off a large share of its roots, and the crown may not show it for a year or two.

A plan for a big parcel

On a small acreage, it helps to look at every tree at once: which ones are healthy, which ones should be watched, and which ones should go now. We can write that up as a simple plan with a price for each item, so you can spread the work over a couple of years and do the most important parts first.

Pumpkin Center Questions

Can a very old tree be saved?

Often, if the trunk and root flare are sound. Removing deadwood and reducing weight on the longest limbs can add years. If there is serious decay at the base, removal is safer.

My tree is next to the highway fence. Can you cut it?

If it is on your property, yes. If any part is in the state or county right-of-way, there may be extra steps, and we will tell you before scheduling.

Do you clear brush as well as trees?

Yes. On small parcels we often clear brush and volunteer trees during the same visit.

How soon can you come out?

Call and leave the details any time. We will set up an estimate visit at a time that works for you.

Can you grind several stumps at once?

Yes, and it usually lowers the price per stump. We list each stump with its size on the estimate.
