Hillcrest Is Close Quarters

Tree Service in Hillcrest is precision work. Hillcrest is an unincorporated community on the east side of metro Bakersfield, just west of East Niles, with about 10,500 residents packed into less than 1.4 square miles. That is roughly 7,640 people per square mile, close to double the density of the city of Bakersfield as a whole. On blocks like these, a mature tree almost always overhangs a roof, a fence, a neighbor's yard or a power drop, and it has to be handled accordingly.

Why density changes the price

On an open lot, a dead tree can be notched and dropped in a few minutes. In Hillcrest that is rarely possible. Most removals are done by climbing or with a lift, cutting the tree in small pieces and lowering each one by rope into a clear spot. It takes longer and needs more people on the ground, and that is reflected honestly in the estimate. In exchange, nothing lands on the house, the fence or the car next door.

Talk to the neighbors first

When a tree sits on the line or leans over the fence, the job goes better if everyone knows the plan. We are happy to explain the work to a neighbor during the estimate visit, and we can schedule the day so cars are moved and pets are inside. If a branch from the neighbor's tree is the problem, you can usually have it cut back to your side of the line, but a conversation first saves a lot of trouble.

Kern County jurisdiction

Hillcrest was first counted as its own place in the 2020 census and is governed by Kern County, not the City of Bakersfield. The city's parkway and contractor-permit rules do not apply. A review of county rules found no general permit for removing an ordinary tree on private land in unincorporated Kern County. Overhead utility lines are another matter: lines on the poles belong to PG&E, and we keep our work to the parts of a tree that are safe for a tree crew.

What we do most in Hillcrest

  • Sectional removals of trees between houses
  • Cutting back limbs that rest on roofs or patio covers
  • Clearing branches off the service drop to the house
  • Palm frond cleanups on tall palms over driveways
  • Stump grinding in small back yards
  • Pruning young trees so they stay in proportion to the lot

Picking a tree that fits

On a lot this size, the best tree is one that stays small. A crape myrtle, a Chinese pistache or another tree that tops out around 25 to 30 feet can shade a patio for decades without outgrowing the yard. The city of Bakersfield has been replanting with pistache and crape myrtle, along with deodar cedar and Canary Island pine, since its drought losses. The cedar and pine get much bigger, so save them for wider lots.

Wind on the east side

Northeast Bakersfield was one of the hardest-hit areas during the February 4, 2024 windstorm. Trees that failed in that storm usually had warning signs ahead of time: dead limbs, deep cracks or a crown made heavy by years without thinning. A quick look before winter is cheaper than a tree on the roof.

Hillcrest Questions

Why does removal cost more on my lot than my cousin's in the country?

Because on a crowded lot the tree has to be cut and lowered in pieces instead of dropped. More time and more rigging go into protecting the houses and fences around it.

Can you take branches off the line going to my house?

Usually, yes, for the service drop from the pole to your house. Branches near the high-voltage lines on the poles are PG&E's responsibility, so we will tell you if that call needs to be made.

Will you grind a stump in a back yard with only a gate for access?

Most of the time. Compact grinders fit through standard gates. We measure the gate at the estimate.

What tree should I replant in a small Hillcrest yard?

Something that stays under about 30 feet, handles heat and does not drop heavy fruit, such as crape myrtle or Chinese pistache. Plant it well away from walls and the slab.
