Shafter Yards Between Orchards and Warehouses
Tree Service in Shafter is shaped by open ground. The city sits about 18 miles west-northwest of Bakersfield along State Route 43, surrounded by almond and pistachio orchards, cotton, grapes and alfalfa. With few tall buildings to break the wind, yard trees on the edge of town take the full force of valley storms. Shafter's own weather records show about 7.3 inches of rain a year and July highs near 99 degrees, so these trees are also living mostly on irrigation.
A town of young families
Census QuickFacts reports that a third of Shafter residents are under 18 and the average household has 3.64 people. In practice that means a lot of backyards with play sets and pools under trees, which changes what we look for. A dead limb over a lawn is a nuisance; the same limb over a trampoline is a priority. When we write a Shafter estimate, we list the jobs in order of what they could hit.
New tracts, old trees
Shafter grew from about 17,000 people in 2010 to nearly 20,000 in 2020, and the Paramount Logistics Park brought distribution centers for Amazon, FedEx Ground and others. Newer neighborhoods have small, young trees that need structural pruning and the right spacing from walls and sidewalks. The older parts of town, near the original Santa Fe rail line, have the big ash, pine and mulberry trees that need thinning or have reached the end of their lives.
Wind outages reach Shafter too
During the February 4, 2024 windstorm, PG&E reported about 350 customers out in Shafter, part of roughly 15,000 across Kern County. On farm-edge lots, wind loads come from one direction across a mile of open ground, and trees often develop a lean and one-sided crown. Thinning the heavy side and removing dead wood before winter reduces the sail effect.
What Shafter homeowners ask us for
- Pruning young street and yard trees in newer subdivisions
- Thinning older shade trees that catch the wind off the fields
- Removing dead pines and declining ash
- Trimming or removing palms
- Grinding stumps so the ground can be landscaped
- Clearing trees and brush from the edge of large rural parcels
Minter Field and wide-open space
Shafter's Minter Field opened in June 1941 as a training base and is now a public airport used by crop dusters and private planes; the Gossamer Condor made its prize-winning human-powered flight there in 1977. Rural parcels around the airport and along the county roads often have long windbreak rows that were planted decades ago and never thinned. Those rows can be cleaned up in phases, starting with the dead and leaning trees closest to buildings and the road.

Shafter Questions
Do you come out to Shafter for small jobs?
Yes. Shafter is part of our regular area, and small jobs such as a single palm or one stump get the same written quote as bigger ones.
My tree leans away from the fields. Is it going to fall?
A lean that developed slowly with the prevailing wind is common and often stable. A lean that appeared suddenly, or soil cracking on the opposite side, is a warning sign. Call us if you see that.
Can you remove almond or pistachio trees from a backyard?
Yes. Old orchard trees left behind on residential lots are a regular job. We can grind the stumps so the area can be landscaped.
What should I plant in a new Shafter yard?
Pick something that handles heat and alkaline soil, such as Chinese pistache, valley oak or a heat-tolerant pine, and keep it at least 10 feet from the house. We can give you a short list when we are out.
