Established Trees in Greenacres
Tree Service in Greenacres is mostly about mature trees. Greenacres was founded in 1930 and lies about 6 miles west of Bakersfield. It has gone back and forth on the census map: it was listed as a place starting in 1970, dropped before 2000 after part of it was annexed into Bakersfield, and brought back as a census-designated place in 2010. What did not change is the housing. About 77 percent of the community's homes are owner-occupied, and many of the trees in those yards were planted by people who are still there.
Older trees, bigger decisions
A 50- or 60-foot pine, eucalyptus or ash on a residential lot is a valuable thing in a hot climate, and also a large responsibility. The common issues we see in established yards like these are heavy end-weight on long horizontal limbs, deadwood in the interior of the crown, roots that have spread under slabs and pools, and decline in species that do not handle valley conditions well, such as coast redwood and liquidambar.
Partly city, partly county
Because part of the old Greenacres area was annexed into the city, a street that looks the same can be under different rules depending on where it falls. Inside Bakersfield, trees in the public parkway are controlled by the city's Recreation and Parks director, and contractors need a permit before working on them. In the unincorporated part, those city rules do not apply. We check your address before quoting any work near the street.
What Greenacres owners ask for
- Crown reduction and thinning on tall, mature trees
- Removal of dead redwoods, sweetgums and pines
- Palm cleanups and removal of tall palms
- Cabling consultations for split or weak forks
- Stump grinding and root cleanup
- Shaping young replacement trees
Redwoods and sweetgums
The last big drought hit coast redwoods especially hard in Bakersfield, and the city stopped planting them afterward. UC Cooperative Extension in Kern County has also estimated that around 80 percent of local liquidambar trees are in decline. If you have either one and it has been thinning, it is worth a professional look. Sometimes the answer is better watering. Sometimes it is a planned removal before the tree drops limbs.
Keep what is worth keeping
Our first job on a Greenacres estimate is telling you what is healthy. Many big trees look rough after a hot summer and are perfectly sound. A good thinning and deadwood removal can extend their life by years. When a tree has a real defect, such as a cracked fork or decay at the base, we will show you what we see.

Greenacres Questions
My redwood is browning. Should I remove it?
Not automatically. Inner needles brown naturally, and better deep watering can help. Browning from the top down or a thinning crown year after year is a sign of serious stress, and then removal may be the safer choice.
Can a split trunk be cabled instead of removed?
Sometimes. Cables and braces can support a weak fork if the wood is sound. If the split already shows decay, removal is usually the better answer.
Can you shrink a tall pine?
Pines do not respond well to heavy reduction. Thinning, deadwood removal and selective limb removal are the usual options. If a pine is simply too big for its spot, removal and replanting may be wiser.
Do you take everything away after?
Yes, unless you want firewood or chips left behind. The estimate lists cleanup as its own item.
How do I know if a big pine is safe?
Look for a lean that has changed, cracks or mushrooms at the base, dead tops or sap streaming from many holes in the trunk, which can mean bark beetles. If you see any of these, have it inspected.
